Attendance - Everyday Pays Here at Washington we believe attendance pays students in their educational growth now, and is an investment in their future. Students get a ticket each day they are in school, on time. Each week we choose a winner from each grade and they get to choose a prize as a way to recognize their presence in school.
One of my favorite parts of being a counselor is having lunch with the students. It is a chance to get to know them and spend time with them for no other reason than wanting to. We laugh, we joke, we play games, and ask questions. It is a lovely way to spend time. This year my goal is to rotate through the classes and have lunch with every student.
Character Education is a large part of a counselors duties. This was a lower grade lesson on honesty. After learning what honesty is, the kids were able to go fishing for a scenario. The scenario was read aloud and the class came up with an answer. Each student got a swedish fish for participating and choosing to be honest.
While not part of my regular day, I was able to participate as a volunteer coach for Girls On The Run. Here the girls were making quote jars to be given to children coming into the hospital. Each jar contained 30 inspirational quotes. One for each day of a month. This was a great opportunity for the girls to think about helping others, come up with creative ways to do it, and put one into practice. The Girls On The Run season ended with a 5k at Sugarhouse park. Our girls did an amazing job pushing themselves beyond what they thought were their limits.
